Fairfield man injured in small plane accident

Pilot, 80, had been ejected from cockpit.

An 80-year-old man was injured Wednesday when his small place nosedived and he was ejected from the open cockpit.

William Conn, 80, of Fairfield, had injuries to his hand and leg when the Ohio Highway Patrol arrived on scene around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Butler County Regional Airport, said Trooper Nathan Stanfield.

Conn was treated at the scene and later drove himself to an area hospital, Stanfield said.

Witness reports and Conn’s report of what happened differ, Stanfield said. Conn said he was conducting maintenance on the 1966 McKnight Flybaby 1A plane at the time of the injury, according to Stanfield.

Witnesses told troopers on the scene that the plane had been taxiing near the hangar when it traveled into the grass before returning to concrete. The plane then nosedived into the concrete and the propellers struck the ground.

Conn was then ejected, witnesses said. The plane sustained minor damage to the engine and the propellers are bent, Stanfield said.

The Federal Aviation Administration will conduct its own investigation.
