Fenwick pulls AD offer to embattled ex-Northmont coach

Parental “backlash” led Fenwick High School to rescind its athletic director’s position to Lance Schneider, he told this news outlet Wednesday.

Schneider said Fenwick Principal Andrew Barczak offered him the AD position and he accepted a couple of weeks ago. He was set to begin on Aug. 29 and make $60,000 a year, he said.

But last week, he was notified the offer was rescinded after Fenwick parents became upset by his hiring, he said.

Interim athletic director and boys basketball coach Pat Kreke said the Catholic school was taking applications until Sept. 15. He refused to say why the position reopened. He directed questions to Barczak, who didn’t return several calls left by this news outlet.

Fenwick has been seeking an athletic director since Jon Payne, who served as Fenwick AD for three years, left after last school year for a similar position at Reading High School.

On the Archdiocese of Cincinnati web site, it says Fenwick is seeking an AD for the academic year of 2016-2017. The AD is one of the “educational leaders” of the school as a member of the administrative team, the site says. The AD reports to the principal, according to the site.

Schneider said he believed the Fenwick job was the “perfect opportunity” to resurrect his career that was buried after 16 years at Northmont High School in Clayton. He said during his teaching and coaching career, the district took no disciplinary action against him.

Schneider resigned as Northmont's head football coach in 2015 amid a three-month investigation into his coaching methods. He sent an email to his coaching staff where he "made a mistake in judgment in a light-hearted and greatly exaggerated evaluation," he wrote in a statement.

The email eventually was made public after it was shown to the district’s board of education by a member of the coaching staff.

Schneider told this news outlet that frustration with the school's football program prompted him to write an email to assistant coaches that referred to his student players in offensive language.

"I used exaggerated and colorful language to make a point," Schneider wrote in a statement after the email surfaced. "I was wrong and apologize to the Northmont Community for not upholding the high values of the Northmont School District. I wish I had never sent the email and have paid a heavy price for my momentary lack of judgment. I have lost the job I love and have caused hardship for my family."

Schneider was paid $70,188 as a physical education teacher and $7,867 as head football coach, according to district records.

“I made one mistake,” he said. “I was hoping Fenwick would take mercy on me and forgive me. Give me a chance to get back into what I love. I thought this is what God presented to me. I thought it was time to move on.”

Instead, Schneider, 49, finds himself looking for a job. Before applying for the position at Fenwick, he applied to be the head football coach at Middletown High School, but wasn’t interviewed, he said.
