Former Dayton school board chief, health official Boyd dies

Ricky Boyd, a former Dayton school board president and longtime director at the Montgomery County Combined Health District, died Sunday at age 74.

Boyd, a Central State University graduate, worked for the health district from 1982 to 2006, launching the special services division, which coordinated programs aimed at improving minority health in the community.

Boyd served on the Dayton Public Schools board of education for eight years from 1994-2001. Described early in his term as a “maverick” and “agitator,” he took the school board presidency his final two years and led the effort that eventually ended student busing for racial integration.

Boyd’s health district job ended in controversy when his division was dissolved in 2006. Amid a lawsuit and community cries of racism, the parties settled out of court.
