Greene’s sanitary department head to retire

The director of the Greene County Sanitary Engineering Department has announced he is retiring at the end of this month.

Commissioners voted Thursday on a resolution honoring Ron Volkerding, whose retirement is effective March 31.

Volkerding was hired in Greene County as a deputy director of operations at the sanitary department in July 1994. He was promoted to senior manager in June 2000 and promoted to his current role in November 2009, according to county records.

“He has overseen the implementation and completion of numerous projects, totaling over tens of millions of dollars, such as the Cityworks program; upgrades to four wastewater treatment plants; as well as the expansion of the county’s water water supply system,” the commissioners’ resolution reads.

County Administrator Brandon Huddleson said he got started in Greene County working for Volkerding. Huddleson cited upgrades to all the county’s wastewater treatment plants as among the successes under his former boss’s watch.

“Ron has been with us for 23 years and has accomplished a ton during that time,” Huddleson said. “We’re really going to miss Ron with all of his expertise and his knowledge and all the hard work he’s put in.”

While working for the county, Volkerding, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, said he earned a master’s degree in public administration from Wright State University.

The 64-year-old said his immediate plans are to spend time with his grandchildren and family, adding that “I will have to be busy otherwise I’ll get bored.”
