Ohio's top official in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs retired Thursday after investigators recommended that he be removed from federal service. That development was big news, in part because of the large number of veterans who call Ohio home.

According to VA data, there were about 866,000 veterans living in Ohio as of Sept. 30, 2014. That ranked Ohio sixth nationally, but the state also ranked 31st in vets' percentage of overall population, according to a comparison with U.S. Census population estimates from 2014.

The area has seen some recent veterans success stories. We reported earlier this week that the Ohio Veterans Bonus has paid out more $73.5 million in claims since 2010. The local Military Veterans Resource Center has worked to offer more services. One study named Beavercreek the best place for veterans to live in the nation.

About 1 of every 13 people in Ohio is a veteran and five of the state's top 18 counties in veterans population are in our region, ensuring that veterans issues will remain important in this area.
