Lakota schools continues its digital push with a new way to connect to families

Amid the busiest social media year in the history of Lakota Schools, the district has now released its first mobile app designed to inform and simplify the busy lives of school families.

The app combines information into one online portal by providing access to each of Lakota's 22 schools and more than 1,000 employees in Ohio's eighth largest school system.

“We work hard to build personal relationships with our families. But if we expect to keep our parents in the know and connected to what’s happening around Lakota, we know that convenient access goes a long way,” said Matt Miller, superintendent of Lakota’s 16,500-students.

"Many of our parents have multiple students attending multiple schools at one time. Our updated mobile app allows those parents to customize their settings so they can see just the news, events and alerts that pertain to them," added Miller, who since starting as leader of the Butler County district in August has launched numerous social media programs, including the district's first Twitter account and a series of YouTube videos highlighting the district.

“The app is also a quick resource for being able to do everything from check this month’s menu to call or email a specific school to double check the time and location of an event,” he said.

The app offers a wide menu of information and interactive options. These include: School directions, hours and contact information; events calendar and the option to sync with your personal calendar; breakfast & lunch menus; portals like Home Access Center, EZ Pay, Canvas and School Messenger and district and school push notifications.

In addition to all the current notifications methods, important and time-sensitive district alerts like weather delays and closures will be delivered to app users as a push notification.

The new mobile app was made available to the public just last week, but Lakota school parent Kathy Joiner is already a user.

“As I’m learning about this new app, I’m most excited about everything being accessible with the push of a button. I have three kids in two different schools, and between all the social media outlets, emails, paper communication and website, it has been extremely overwhelming at times for years,” Joiner said.

But now, she said, “I have one place I can now go to quickly and get the info I need.”
