The faces of the fallen have names listed on the black granite wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
David L. Hine wants to make sure all 3,097 names from Ohio have a photo to remember their sacrifice.
With the help of volunteers, Hine has tracked down about 600 photographs of deceased Vietnam veterans — many from the Dayton, Springfield and Hamilton areas. Now he’s searching for dozens more, asking for help to find the missing.
The simple goal is to pair a photo for every name listed on the wall, 58,307 in all. So far, about 41,700 photos have been found nationwide. Every fallen service member in six states now has a photo with each name for the Faces Never Forgotten program.
Dayton and Montgomery County lost 143 service members, and photos are still needed for 67, according to Hine, who was once stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and now lives in Greenfield, Ind.
“We have to make sure they are remembered,” the 65-year-old Air Force veteran said. “These guys gave their lives for us.”
Photos are posted to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund virtual Wall of Faces, appearing online on the birthdays of the soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen who died. A black square with the service member’s name appears when no photo is there. Eventually, the photos will be displayed digitally on a giant screen inside a future $115 million Education Center at the Wall on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
“The project to collect the photos is a huge one and when we get the Education Center built, we need a photo of every man and woman who died in Vietnam,” Hine said.
Among those photos still needed are George and Joseph Youngerman, first cousins who died one day apart in Vietnam, Hine said.
“We have to make sure that the Youngermans and every casualty from Montgomery County is remembered not just locally, but nationally …” he said in an email.
Finding photos takes time. The nationwide project started in 2010.
“It’s been a very successful campaign, but it’s not easy,” said Lee A. Allen, chief operating officer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C. “The war ended 40 years ago, and the pictures that we don’t have are getting harder and harder to find. We’re depending on volunteers, friends and family, neighbors and other people in the community who may have never known the soldiers who fought in Vietnam but find it a fitting tribute.”
If all the money is raised for the Education Center, groundbreaking will happen in November 2017, he said. The Education Center, to be built underground, would open in November 2020 next to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The fund raised money to build the Memorial Wall, which took its place 33 years ago on the National Mall near the Lincoln Memorial.
“Since it’s been created, it’s been a place where veterans come to pay their tribute, pay their respects,” said Allen, an Air Force veteran and the son of a Vietnam veteran, “but also to heal.”
It’s literally become a touchstone over the decades to those who lost family members or friends in the war. Visitors have laid down 400,000 artifacts at the wall: Sonograms of unborn grandchildren. Dog tags. Boots. A motorcycle. Baseball helmets. Letters to spouses. A helicopter rotor. And mementos that are now fragments of a long ago war.
Former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Peter Pace left several note cards with written messages and four silver stars pinned to each at the Memorial on the Marine’s last day in uniform in 2007. He did it to memorialize Marines in his platoon who died in Vietnam, Allen said.
Each of the hundreds of thousands of artifacts is stored in a National Park Service warehouse.
Photos may be submitted to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund website at www.vvmf.org/how-to-submit or by mail to the VVMF at 2600 Virginia Ave. NW, Suite 104, Washington, D.C. 20037. They may also be sent to Hine via email at mrdavidlhine@att.net.
