“(Smog) is an irritant to the respiratory system formed when bright sunlight mixes with emissions from vehicles and small gasoline-powered engines. These emissions collect in a stagnant air mass and form smog,” Miami Valley Planning Commission Executive Director Brian O. Martin said.

Experts recommend children, the elderly, and people with respiratory diseases to reduce prolonged time outside.

“It’s OK to be active outside, but take more breaks and do less strenuous activities,” Martin said.

To prevent the formation of smog:

  • Avoid driving if possible.
  • Refuel vehicles after 8 p.m., or wait until the advisory is lifted
  • Combine trips if you must drive
  • Mow your lawn after 6 p.m.
