Bear Elementary pupils test design skills

Test part of monthly design squad exercise in critical thinking.

MIAMISBURG — Pupils at Bear Elementary School in Miamisburg put their math and science skills to test during the school’s monthly design squad program.

In it, kindergarten and third-grade teachers work together to present lessons to students in a joint session, after which, an older and younger student are paired to solve a problem that requires critical thinking. The problem also includes the application of math and science concepts taught in the classroom, and teachers stress cooperation and teamwork throughout the program.

Students most recently were charged with designing and building a boat that would float for 10 seconds when weighted down by 25 pennies, using the materials of drinking straws, plastic wrap, small drinking cups and duct tape.

“Our students talk about these lessons for weeks because they are exciting and practical,” said Principal Amy Dobson.

“Our teachers love them because there are so many math and science concepts presented in each scenario. Authentic, problem-based learning is so successful. This is just a wonderful program.”
