“We love coffee almost as much as we love beer, so we had this idea to partner with some of the best roasters in the state to show how the flavor profile of a coffee beer can be so different depending on the beans,” Ryan Blevins, MadTree head brewer, said in a release. “We made sure the beer took a bit of a back seat so the coffee could shine. Overall, it was awesome to see how their passion for coffee mirrors the passion we have for crafting quality beer.”

Henry Dean, president of Boston Stoker, told this news outlet that the coffee-beer blend “was the perfect match for us.”
“We used one of our direct trade coffees from Costa Rica called El Llano Organic,” Dean said. “This farm has been a direct-trade farm we have worked with for about five years now, and it is family run by Jose Antonio Rojas Camacho.”

“I just recently went to Costa Rica a few weeks ago to visit with El Llano and took some of the beer with me to share with Jose and his family.”
Boston Stoker was founded in Englewood in 1973 by Don and Sally Dean as a pipe and tobacco shop. As a strategy to build their customer base in a new business, the Deans started offering free, freshly brewed specialty coffee to customers while they shopped, according to the company’s web site.

The demand began to grow to buy the coffee to take it home, eventually leading Boston Stoker into the specialty coffee industry.
Boston Stoker operates five coffee shops in the region, including a location that opened in December 2017 at 215 N. Main St. (Ohio 48) across the street from Benham’s Grove in Centerville. A Boston Stoker shop inside the Dayton International Airport shut down in late November 2018.
