Update@9:31 a.m.:

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they could not see any flames, but heavy smoke was coming from the back of the trailer, said Chad Follick, city of Vandalia fire chief.

They called a HAZMAT crew, which determined that it was safe to open the back of the trailer, he said. When they opened the trailer, they discovered that batteries the trailer was hauling had moved around and were leaking.

The liquid combined with some other hazardous materials in the back of the trailer and they caused the fire, Follick said.

North Dixie Drive and Old Springfield Road were closed for several hours while crews worked at the scene. The roads reopened about 9 a.m.

There were no injuries, Follick said.
