Boy, 15, dies in Farmersville ATV accident

The 15-year-old who lost his life in an ATV accident last night is Levi Montoya, a freshman football player for Valley View High School and class secretary.

His death was confirmed by Jackson Twp. Police Chief John Schade.

Grief counselors are at the high school today.

Levi had been taken to a hospital by CareFlight after the accident behind a residence in the 15,000-block of Chicken Bristle Road that was reported just before 7 p.m.

Schade said today that he was not wearing a helmet, and was found by his father. No one witnessed the crash, he added.

Investigators are trying to determine whether his head hit the ATV or a tree. There is damage to the vehicle, the chief said. He added today that it will be several weeks before the department releases any more information about the crash. He said conditions were wet when the crash occurred.

Schade said he does not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved.

Before CareFlight arrived, we're told CPR was being performed on the boy in a corn field behind a residence.

In less than an hour of the news that Levi had been identified as the victim, dozens of students began gathering at the high school in Germantown, where final exams have been occurring this week. The memorial gathering included at least 150 students, teachers, school district administrators, grief counselors and local pastors, said Jenny Michael, Valley View Board of Education member.

"It's been a devastating night for our Valley View community, to lose one of our students," she said. "He was so well loved and liked by all the students."

The tragedy prompted the district to activate its crisis plan, Michael said, which means the campus will be open for the community on Friday to come and be together. Friday is the last day of classes for the school year.

"We know that our students are hit hard by this," she said. "In a district this size, everybody knows everybody and he was well loved and from a well-loved family in this community."

Levi Montoya's age was corrected in this story.
