Caught on tape: Semi goes airborne, explodes

A dash cam in the cab of a tractor-trailer captured another truck going airborne before crashing and exploding on Interstate 74 near Greensburg, Ind. on Thursday.

The crash happened at about 1:40 p.m. near I-74 mile marker 132 when Indiana State Troopers said the semi driver was forced off the roadway.

Troopers said 30-year-old Ryan Young, of Owenton, Ky., was heading east and approaching exit 132 when another driver drifted into his lane.

Young tried to swerve to avoid the other vehicle and ran off the south side of the interstate and the semi ran up a hill through a guardrail.

Troopers said the semi continued east, went airborne after it “ramped” the US 421 interchange. The tractor-trailer struck another guardrail and that caused its fuel tanks to ignite.

Young suffered some minor wounds to his face and head. Troopers said Young’s 7-year-old son — who was a passenger in the semi at the time — suffered only a few scratches.

Both victims were taken to the Decatur County Hospital for treatment.

The crash is still under investigation.
