Clark State named a top school for veterans

Clark State Community College earned a designation as a top school for veterans and active-duty military members for the second consecutive year.

The award, from the 2016 Military Advanced Education and Transition guide, will help Clark State recruit new students, and rewards the college for the work it’s done the past several years, said Nina Wiley, dean of enrollment services at Clark State. In recent years, the college has provided priority registration for veterans, allowing them the first chance to enroll in classes.

It also established the Veteran’s Lounge, a dedicated space on campus for veterans to meet, as well as provided training to advisers, helping better prepare them to work through issues veterans and military members often face, Wiley said.

Clark State received the same designation last year.

“It means we are proven to be a smart choice for our veteran and military students,” Wiley said. “We have services embedded in our campus. We have changed and improved the way we communicate with veterans and military students in easing the transition into college and then into the career world.”

The MAE&T guide reviewed programs and policies at more than 600 two- and four-year colleges. It based the designation on factors like financial aid, general support, military culture and online support services for veterans.

“Our goal is to be a dynamic resource for active service members and those who have moved from the military to their civilian careers, helping them find the school that best fits their plans for the future,” said Kelly Fodel, MAE&T’s editor, in a press release.
