Consumer Square to receive cosmetic upgrades

Owners of Consumer Square Shopping Center in Trotwood are planning to redevelop the Salem Avenue commercial development, according to the city’s interim City Manager Quincy Pope.

City leaders were told that Moonbeam Leasing and Management, which own the more than 272,000-square-foot shopping center at 5597 Salem Ave., has plans on renovating the center and upgrading the facade sometime during the second quarter of 2016, according to Pope.

“I think it’s very exciting news not only for Trotwood, but for the northwest corridor,” Pope said. He added that Moonbeam’s long-term plan for the major retail establishment is redevelopment and revitalization of the property.

Development at Consumer Square is a big deal due to the fact that it’s a focal point for the city and once housed some major tenants that included Cub Foods, UPS, Radio Shack, AJ Wright, Rent-A-Center and McSports.

Today, the center includes Office Depot, Sally’s Beauty Supply, Catherines, Dayton Martial Arts Center, Subby’s, Chase Bank, Honey Baked Ham, Sherwin Williams and others.

Shawl L. Pryor, senior vice-president of Moonbeam Leasing and Management, said redevelopment plans for the 30-year-old shopping center are in the preliminary stages.

“What we’re looking at doing next year is some cosmetics upgrades to the shopping center,” Pryor said. He added that these upgrades would include painting, and lighting upgrades.

Pryor did not have an estimated cost for these upgrades.

Pryor visited the city recently to assess the shopping center, which is at least 30 years-old, and the surrounding area.

One of the discoveries of the assessment process was the fact that Salem Avenue had a lot of traffic.

“Which for me is an indication that the people are going past the shopping center and its up to us to figure out how to get them into the shopping center,” Pryor said.

Pryor added that the assessment allowed him to see the potential of the shopping center land.

“It gives us a greater opportunity to be more creative in our design for the redevelopment plans for the shopping center,” Pryor said.

Moonbeam has corporate offices in Las Vegas, Nev.; New York, N.Y.; and Duluth, Ga. and its portfolio includes shopping malls, shopping centers, apartment and luxury rentals, hotels and multi-use office space.
