CONTINUING COVERAGE: School, church mourn Warren County teen killed in crash

The 16-year-old Warren County boy killed in a head-on crash while driving to school at the Dayton Christian High School on Tuesday was mourned at the school and in a statement issued by the Lebanon church where he was recently recognized for his service.

“With great sadness we announce the passing of our parishioner, altar server, and generous church volunteer Thomas Williamitis, who was killed in a car crash,” the statement on the website of St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church.

“Please pray for the repose of his soul and for his family, relatives, and loved ones,” the statement continued. “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.”

Williamitis, age 16 of Oregonia, was pronounced dead at 7:46 a.m. at 8594 Ohio 48 in Clearcreek Township as the result of a head-on collision during a four-car crash near the Lytle-Five Points intersection, according to the Warren County Coroner’s Office.

He was the second Dayton Christian School student killed in less than a year in a crash in Clearcreek Twp. in the second head-on crash in four days in the busy township along the Montgomery-Warren county border.

On Tuesday, Williamitis, a sophomore at the Christian school in Miami Twp., Montgomery County, was northbound on Ohio 48 headed to school and traveled into oncoming traffic, about a mile north of Ohio 73, triggering the four-car crash, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

No updates were immediately available on Wednesday on the condition of Terry Vanderberg, 47, of Centerville, who was was transported by a Careflight helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital.

On Tuesday, she was being treated for life-threatening injuries and listed in critical condition, according to Lt. Chuck O’Bryon of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Also today, Williamitis was mourned at the high school where he was headed at the time of the crash.

“I think it’s a lot of shock today and it’s’ a lot of, just, we’re not really sure how to handle it,” said Chris Malmstrom, the school’s spiritual life director.

No further information was available about the crash, but the investigator expressed sympathy for those mourning Williamitis’ death and worried by Vanderberg’s condition.

“I’m sorry for him and his family. I’m sorry for Miss Vanderberg and her family,” Trooper R. Todd Bailey said.
