Cause of death listed after body found in Lexington Avenue burned garage

A 30-year-old Dayton man, Vaughn Erwin Sr., was identified Tuesday by Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger as the person whose body was discovered following a Dayton garage fire.

When crews responded around 11:40 p.m. Thursday to the 200 block of Lexington Avenue in Dayton, they found a two-car garage engulfed. Flames burned the garage to the ground.

Erwin’s death was ruled a homicide and the cause was due to a gunshot wound to the head.

Some balloons, a candle and some flowers were placed at the scene of the Lexington Avenue fire.

It marked the third time a body was discovered after a garage fire in the city in recent weeks.

On Sept. 26, remains later identified as Kwasi Casey were found in a burned out garage on Fountain Avenue.

Casey, 40, had been missing since July. His family believes Casey was kidnapped.

On Sept. 10, a body was found in a garage on North Horton Street after a fire the previous day. The man was identified as Patrick Northern, 53, of Dayton. His cause of death has not been released. It is unknown whether Northern was in the garage at the time of the fire or if his body was placed there after.

It’s unknown whether any of the three cases are connected.
