Smoke from the fire was visible by crews from over a mile away, Moraine Fire Chief David Cooper said.

The fire started in an occupied unit, but the occupant and others staying at the motel were able to self-evacuate, Cooper said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but the occupant of the unit where the fire started is being questioned by Moraine police, Cooper said.

Firefighters were aided by fire stops, pieces of drywall in the attic of the motel, that prevented the fire from spreading to other units, according to Cooper.

The unit where the fire broke out and a couple surrounding units are considered total losses, Cooper said.

No injuries were reported.
