UPDATE @ 12:31 a.m. (May 31): The homeowner left a cigarette unattended on a bed and that likely led to the fire on West Fairview Avenue, Dayton Fire District Chief Cheryl Clark said.

The homeowner admitted leaving the second-floor bedroom, she said.

Crews were able to contain the damage to that room, but Clark estimated the fire and smoke caused $5,000 in damage to the wood frame house and contents.

The homeowner will have to find other sleeping accommodations for the night, Clark said. No injuries were reported.

INITIAL REPORT (May 30)
