Cyclists set record pace around flight line in WPAFB season opener

One hundred and two bicyclists, some from as far away as Fort Wayne, Indiana, converged upon Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s Area A Tennis Club parking lot late in the afternoon of April 9 for the first Blue Streak Time Trial of the 2019 season!

The sky was clear and temperatures in the 60s, ideal weather for bicycling.

Josh Bozue of Fairborn won his ninth consecutive Blue Streak Time Trial by finishing the 10-mile course first overall in a blistering 20:36.6 for a 29.1 mph average. Bozue’s speed was the fastest ever recorded with a conventional time trial bicycle since Blue Streak began in 1998.

Dentist Gary Painter led the nine members of his Fort Wayne Outfitters team by finishing third overall in 21:30.7 for a 27.9 mph average speed.

Kara Dickey of Team Logik was ninth among the women. She finished in 29:21.4 for an average speed of 20.4 mph.

She wrote afterwards, “I very much enjoyed Blue Streak last week, as it was my first time trial. It was a really a great experience and such a fun environment! I started triathlons last summer and was lucky enough to qualify for the USAT age group national championships in the Olympic distance, which was held last fall in Cleveland, Ohio. It was also a great experience and very much a learning experience. … I am currently a second-year resident in the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, United States Air Force Combined Pediatrics Residency Program. Most of our training takes place at Dayton Children’s (Hospital), but as an Air Force captain, I also have rotations and clinic days on base. After residency I will take my Pediatrics Boards and be an Air Force pediatrician.”

The next Blue Streak Time Trial will take place June 11. Participating riders will gather in the Area A Tennis Club parking lot with their bicycles and helmets between 5 and 5:30 p.m.

Participants are asked to register and obtain numbers at the table set up in the parking lot by 5:30 p.m. Helmets are required. Bicyclists will be released at 30-second intervals to ride the 10-mile course starting at 6 p.m.

Blue Streak Time Trials will continue the second Tuesday of each month through October. These Tuesdays will include July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10 and Oct. 8.

Those without base access must pre-register at least 10 days before each Blue Streak Time Trial by going to the Speedy Feet website at http://www.speedy-feet.com/race-entry.php?id=1472.
