Cyclosporiasis outbreak reported in Miami County

Miami County Public Health is reporting an outbreak of Cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal infection caused from eating food infected with the Cyclospora parasite.

There have been four cases confirmed in the county since May 31 with patients showing symptoms in early June.

Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis include watery and explosive bowel movements, as well as loss of appetite, stomach pain and bloating, fatigue and extreme weight loss.

Anyone with those symptoms should contact a health care provider. Those showing symptoms in or around early June should call public health at 937-573-3458.

The source of the outbreak has not been determined at this time, according to public health officials.
