Darke County man linked to multiple car break-ins arrested

Police arrested a man who has been involved in vehicle break-ins throughout the Village of New Madison.

Matthew Spence, 28, of New Madison was arrested Sunday after fleeing from police and locking himself in an apartment in the 100 block of West Washington Street around 2:25 a.m., according to Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, deputies observed suspicious behavior from Spence in the 100 block of Railroad Street. When contact was attempted to be made, Spence fled the scene, dropping several items stolen from vehicles on Railroad Street.

Deputies were able to get into contact with the occupant  who resides in the apartment Spence locked himself into. The occupant, who was not at the apartment at the time, allowed deputies to enter the apartment and search the property, Darke County Sheriff’s Office said.

Police found stolen items linked to car break-ins that occured Saturday.

Spence was arrested on five counts of theft and is at the Darke County Jail, according to a release.

Spence’s involvement in the vehicle break-ins over the previous weeks is under investigation.
