The Dayton City Commission paid tribute to the five patrol officers and one sergeant who assisted in stopping the shooter in less than 30 seconds after he started shooting early Aug. 4.
The six officers are:
- Sgt. William C. Knight, sworn in Feb. 14, 1997
- Officer Vincent Carter, sworn in April 8, 2016
- Officer David Denlinger, sworn in April 8, 2016
- Officer Ryan Nabel, sworn in April 8, 2016
- Officer Brian Rolfes, sworn in April 8, 2016
- Officer Jeremy Campbell, sworn in Aug. 5, 2016

Those officers were surrounded by the police department’s command staff as city leaders recognized them for heroism.
“We can provide all the training, equipment, policies, supervision, but to have, when it comes down to it, to have that kind of courage, to do what they did that evening and save countless lives. We just could not be more proud of those six officers,” Lt Col. Matt Carper said.
