Diversapack of Monroe winding down operations

MONROE — Diversapack of Monroe is winding down its operations and will stop production by the end of March, said General Manager Brian Willhoite.

The first round of layoffs was Monday. Diversapack, 801 N. Garver Road, now has about 150 employees, down from about 180 employees, Willhoite said. Jobs will continue to be phased out as the plant winds down.

“What we’re going through right now is we’re winding down production,” he said. “We’ve worked hard to place as many people as possible. We’re not leaving people high and dry.”

A notice received in January by the Ohio Office of Workforce Development under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act announced the plant’s closure on or around March 5.

Diversapack of Monroe manufactures liquid personal care items, such as body wash, lotion and shampoos, and fills containers with the liquids.

The plant won’t completely close until the end of May after an auction, Willhoite said. Some employees have been transferred to other Diversapack sites, he said. New York-based Diversapack also has area locations in Batavia and Cincinnati.

Diversapack is closing the Monroe location because of the loss of one customer, coupled with a company financial decision, he said.

“It’s just a financial decision that was made by the company to close this facility,” he said.
