Man arrested in Harrison Twp. charged with 4 pedestrian deaths in Arizona

A man arrested at a Harrison Twp. home Monday afternoon is facing charges for allegedly striking and killing four pedestrians on an Arizona street in March, according to jail records.

Alex Bashaw, 28, was arrested around 1 p.m. Monday in the 5500 block of Markey Road in Harrison Twp. on a warrant out of Maricopa County, Arizona, records show.

Bashaw was indicted by a grand jury on four counts of manslaughter in connection to a March 13 crash that killed four people in Fountain Hills, Arizona, located about 30 miles northeast of Phoenix, according to the Associated Press.

Investigators said the SUV Bashaw was driving jumped a curb and hit the pedestrians as they waited to cross the street, the Associated Press reported.

Three of the pedestrians died at the scene. The victims were identified as Patti Doornbros, 60, of Canada, Robert Bonta, 71, and Karan Bonta, 71, both of Wever, Iowa, according to the Des Moines Register and the Arizona Republic.

Ronald Doornbros, 60, the husband of Patti, was the only survivor of the crash but died from his injuries in June after being transported back to Canada for further treatment, according to the Arizona Republic.

Bashaw remained at the scene after the crash and showed no initial signs of impairment, according to the newspaper.

Bashaw now awaits extradition to Arizona.
