Drivers to see more road construction; jobs come with it

Ohio road construction projects to cost $126 million and provide 111,000 jobs.

DAYTON — Area motorists will encounter more road constructions zones this year than ever before, the Ohio Department of Transportation said Wednesday, April 7.

The good news is that the 102 projects will generate thousands of jobs and result in better road conditions throughout Montgomery, Miami, Auglaize, Darke, Clark, Champaign, Logan, Mercer and Shelby counties, all of which comprise ODOT’s District 7, officials said.

Twenty-eight of the projects are in Montgomery County. A list of projects for counties south of Montgomery County was not available Wednesday.

While areas marked by orange construction barrels create problems for motorists, Montgomery County Commissioner Debbie Lieberman said “we are thrilled to see them. They mean jobs for us.”

Ohio roadwork projects will generate 111,000 jobs this year, officials said.

The local projects, which will cost $126 million, include finishing the new interchange at Interstate 75 and Austin Pike. That project will open in June.

Construction on I-75 through downtown will continue as well. The second phase, costing an estimated $57.6 million, began last month. The project will provide three lanes each direction and modify the U.S. 35 interchange. Other projects include additional traffic condition signs on I-70 in the Springfield area and a third lane of I-70 between Ohio 72 and U.S. 40 in Clark County.
