Enon company’s CEO named retail leader of the year

Speedway’s president was recently named 2015 Retail Leader of the Year by a convenience store industry association.

Tony Kenney received the honor in Las Vegas at an annual dinner and awards ceremony hosted by Winsight LLC. In 2014, Speedway acquired the Hess convenience store chain for about $2.8 billion, nearly doubling Speedway’s size and making it one of the largest convenience store chains in the U.S.

Speedway is based in Enon and the company employs more than 34,000 workers overall, including hundreds of employees at its corporate headquarters in Clark County.

Executives at Marathon, Speedway’s parent company, credited Kenney last month with its rapid conversion of former Hess stores to the Speedway brand. That helped boost Speedway’s earnings last year to $673 million overall, compared to $544 million in earnings in 2014.

The award honors individuals for leadership excellence, innovation and perseverance to improve a company, according to information from Winsight.

The company has also been active in the community and donated to several projects locally, said Mike McDorman, president and CEO of the Chamber of Greater Springfield.

“Tony is a great example of what a visionary leader looks like,” McDorman said. “He has not only taken Speedway to new heights while at the helm, but he has continued to be a strong supporter in helping our community to move forward.”

Kenney could not be reached for comment this week.

“Tony Kenney is the real deal,” said Mitch Morrison, vice president and group editor for convenience for Winsight. “He sets high expectations, knowing that his team will rise to the challenge. He has been instrumental in Speedway’s leap toward the top of many aspects of the convenience store industry, engineering the biggest (merger and acquisition) deal of 2014 with Speedway’s acquisition of the Hess retail network.”
