Exploring the Great Miami River could earn you a prize

You can win prizes just for exploring the Great Miami River beginning Saturday.

Tour de Way, a new passport program from the Great Miami Riverway, is offering more than $3,000 in prizes to those who scan QR codes with a smartphone at certain locations while paddling or using the trail system through March 2020.

The program will be launched Saturday at MetroParks of Butler County’s RiverCon at the newly-constructed MetroParks’ River Center at the Bicentennial Commons in Middletown. RiverCon runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Everyone who completes a passport will receive a prize. A passport is considered completed if a person visits at least seven location in each Riverway city. Each location enters a person’s name into the drawing.

Participants who take a photo while exploring and post with the hashtag #RiverwayGiveaway on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter will receive double points for that location.

Announced on social media, temporary and other pop-up locations will happen throughout the year. Prizes will include a SmithFly Shoal Tent and a bicycle from Spoken Bicycles.

As the river flows, QR codes are found in Sidney, Piqua, Troy, Dayton, West Carrollton, Miamisburg, Franklin, Middletown and Hamilton. Great Miami Riverway's website provides this page with the code locations in each community.

Here are examples of where to find QR codes in Dayton:

- Paddle or bike the Mad River from Eastwood MetroPark three miles to RiverScape MetroPark. The QR code is at the Mad River Run, left.

- Hike on the Buckeye Trail and North Country Trail to Deeds Point MetroPark. Code is near the Trail Town sign.

-Stop by Dayton Aviation National Historical Park. The QR code on the bulletin board.

- Take a Link Dayton Bike Share ride to or from 2nd Street Public Market. The QR code is on the Link station at the market.

- Go to a free concert at the Levitt Pavilion. The QR code is at the information table.

Codes can also be found at customer service desks at Fifth Third Field and area museums and theaters.
