Extreme couponing can reap big rewards -- if you know what you’re doing

Extreme couponing can lead to some amazing grocery store deals -- if you know how to do it.

The Dayton Daily News is hosting a series of free extreme couponing workshops that will teach shoppers how to navigate the sales flyers, paper and digital coupons, and apps to maximize savings.

“I’m super excited about learning how to keep my money in my pocket to have more of it to spend with my children,” said Monica Epps-Dixon, who attended the first event at 11 Monday morning.

Other attendees said they wanted insider knowledge.

“I had a sister-in-law that did it and she ended up with lots of free things and spent next to nothing,” said Beth Bishop of Middletown. “She never let me in on the secret, though.”

Mary Hoover, blogger at missiontosave.com and extreme coupon saver, is revealing those secrets to workshop attendees.

“We are definitely seeing apps and digital coupons coming into play,” she said Monday. “We are a technological age but really the old school newspaper coupon is still king.”

One main trick of the trade is to only buy items when you have a coupon and they are on sale, according to Hoover.

During each seminar, she explains step-by-step how to use a fast and simple filing system and a database at daytondailynews.com/coupons to match-up those sales and coupons to get huge discounts.

“Once you get the hang of it, you’re never going to want to go back,” she said.

The schedule for the remaining free workshops, all being held at the Cox Media Group building, 1611 S. Main St., Dayton:

  • Tuesday, May 15 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and
  • Wednesday, May 16 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

There are 200 seats available per session. Doors open 15 minutes prior to the event.
