Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival brings in thousands of people, some wary of mosquitoes

The 37th Annual Sweet Corn Festival started Saturday morning and will run until Sunday night.

The festival brings people back every year for their tasty corn.

“It’s sweet and probably the freshest you can get this time of year,” said Jamarr Wortham of Dayton.

“I come out here every year just to enjoy the festivities and also get the corn that’s my main objective is to come out here and get the fresh sweet corn,” he continued.

People are also paying more attention to mosquitoes in the area, especially since some are testing positive for the West Nile virus, but that didn’t stop thousands of attending the festival.

Latrina Carr was out supporting her daughter Shannon who does color guard for the Fairborn band by raising money. They were prepping some of the corn and stated they made sure to wear special anklets and bracelets to keep mosquitoes away.

“She hasn’t gotten bit today so she used them on her ankle because we were around food,” she said.

“They seem to work pretty well,” Carr continued.

The weather has been a little too warm for longer clothes, but that’s also an option.

“I try to wear leggings more than shorts just to give me extra protection,” said Shannon Carr.

Not everyone decided to take precautions before the annual festival though.

“I’m not really worried about the mosquitoes, it doesn’t seem to be a problem to me,” said Wortham.

“We try to use if not the sprays then with seasonal allergies and things like that gets kind of hard and you don’t want something right on your hands because you touch your face,” he continued.

Only mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile virus around the Miami Valley, but no human cases have been confirmed.
