According to Dayton Fire Department Capt. Tyler McCoy, Dayton fire fighters arrived on scene to find a vacant structure on fire, with another home in danger of being exposed to flames 10 feet away. The people who lived in the endangered house had already evacuated when fire crews arrived.

However, McCoy said, fire crews did a good job of preventing the fire from spreading to the second house.
The firefighters used a defensive strategy, McCoy said, by fighting the flames from outside of the burning house. The burning house was already starting to collapse while firefighters got to work.
When our crews spoke to McCoy, firefighters were using an aerial ladder pipe to spray water down on the structure, extinguishing hot spots. McCoy explained that the ladder-mounted hose was used to help fight the fire from above since firefighters couldn't enter the burning house.
