A fire in a warehouse in the 400 block of North Cherry Street in Eaton was complicated by renovations made to the older building, according to Eaton fire officials.

Officials that when crews arrived just before 4 a.m., crews found a fire at the back of the warehouse, which also included office space.

Firefighters forced entry to the rear of the building through a garage door and found the the fire was on the second floor.

However, besides putting out the visible fire, crews faced a problem: the old building’s renovations.

As the interior of the building was remodeled, officials explained, spaces were left behind walls, so firefighters had to tear many of these open to check for lingering flames and hotspots. In addition, the building’s renovations did not provide good airflow, leading firefighters to break out a window in the front of the warehouse for better ventilation.
