Van Schaik was appointed to assistant Montgomery County prosecuting attorney in November 1970, and was promoted in 1979 to chief of the civil division.
“I hired Chris in 1970 right out of law school. It was an excellent choice, as he was a hard-working and smart lawyer,” said Lee Falke, a former Montgomery County Prosecuting Attorney. “In addition to his ability as an attorney and assistant prosecuting attorney, he always had a joke to liven up the day. He is missed.”
Van Shaik worked in the county prosecutor’s office until he retired in 2004. He was also the legal advisor and attorney for Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, and attended the commission meetings for more than two decades.
“Chris Van Schaik displayed the utmost integrity and dedication to a life of public service. He was a most valued employee and was a well-respected expert and speaker on county and municipal law throughout Ohio,” said Montgomery County’s current prosecuting attorney Mat Heck. “Chris had a great sense of humor and will be sadly missed by all of us who had the good fortune of working and spending time with him at and outside of work.”
