Those whose homes were damaged or lost in last week’s tornadoes now can get needed documents like birth certificates and property deeds for free in Montgomery County.
Those documents are necessary for receiving many types of assistance following the storms, but they also could have been lost or destroyed by the elements.
“People who have lost everything in their home, they will have to re-establish all of their documentation, and we want to make it as easy for people as possible,” said Dan Suffoletto, spokesman for Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County.
Public Health will be at several remote locations to provide free birth certificates, as well as free cribs and hepatitis A vaccinations to those impacted by last week’s tornadoes. The services will be offered from 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. today at St. Margaret’s Church at 5301 Free Pike, Trotwood, and 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Harrison Twp. Community Center at 5945 N. Dixie Drive.
In addition, Public Health will have information available about how to get a replacement Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security card.
For birth certificates, Public Health said the person must be 18 years or older and preferably head of their household, have their address prior to the natural disaster and proof of residence, provide a telephone number, optionally provide an email address and will need to complete an application.
Proof of residence can be anything that demonstrates an address in a tornado affected area, from a driver’s license to a bill.

Hepatitis A vaccines will be available as well. There is an ongoing statewide outbreak of the virus that was first declared June 2018. The virus spreads through ingesting even microscopic amounts of fecal matter, and its spread is related to poor hygiene conditions.
Suffoletto said the tornado disrupted some residents’ normal hygiene routines and, with elevated Hep A cases even before the tornado, they are offering vaccines out of an abundance of caution.
The Montgomery County Recorder’s Office is distributing free property deeds to homeowners facing damage from the storms and needing proof of home ownership.
“After seeing the destruction caused by the tornadoes firsthand, I believe it is necessary we ensure every citizen affected is able to prove ownership of their home as simply as possible to restore their lives,” Recorder Brandon McClain said in a statement. “It is necessary we ensure our neighbors who have had their way of life disrupted and their homes destroyed are able to be made whole.”
Property deeds can be obtained in person from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Montgomery County Recorder’s Office, which is located on the fifth floor of the County Administration Building at 451 W. Third St., Dayton, by contacting the Copy Center at 937-225-6381 or by visiting mcrecorder.org.
