Analyst: Gas prices in the Miami Valley likely to remain under $2 through holidays

Gas prices for regular unleaded are likely to remain under $2 a gallon through the holidays, petroleum industry analysts said.

Regular unleaded is being sold for under $2 at multiple gas stations in Springfield and a few in southern Montgomery County as of Wednesday night.

Even at a BP on Wilmington Avenue in Dayton, where the price was $2.07 a gallon, customers were all smiles.

"I think it's a fantastic price considering they've been over three and four dollars a gallon," said Don Schweitzer, of West Carrollton, told News Center 7 Consumer Reporter Rachel Murray.

Dan McTeague, a petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.com, said, "we've seen prices drop almost thirty cents a gallon in one month and everything to do with crude prices have collapsed by some 30 percent."

Crude was being sold per barrel in the $76 range. Today, the price is barely holding at $51, he said.

This time a year ago, some analysts were predicting $100 a barrel.

McTeague said prices could fall lower -- by four or five cents a gallon -- leading up to New Year's Day.

Wednesday evening, the lowest price for regular is $1.84 at the Amoco on South Limestone Street in Springfield.
