Girls, 11 and 12, riding ATVs that collide in Darke County

Two girls, ages 11 and 12, who were not wearing helmets collided the ATVs they were riding Wednesday night on private property.

Crew were called shortly after 9 p.m. to the 5000 block of Smith Road.

Preliminary investigation shows that the the girls were each riding 4-wheelers. They were driving towards each other when they took evasive action to avoid a head-on collision. However, they were unsuccessful and did collide, according to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

The 11-year-old girl, who was riding a Yamaha Big Bear 400, was treated on the scene. The 12-year-old girl, who was operating a Honda 90, was taken to Wayne Hospital, where she was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Tri-Village Rescue and the Liberty Twp. Fire Department also responded to the crash, which deputies said remains under investigation.
