Trotwood stolen gun found in Dayton yard

UPDATE @ 12:33 p.m. (Nov. 14)

The Trotwood police report indicates the gun was stolen from a then-74-year-old’s glove box by a cleaning lady.

The Trotwood victim told police he let the female suspect, a 26-year-old woman, in and out through the garage, which is when she had the opportunity to get into glove box.

Dayton police have the gun at its evidence lab and it will be returned to Trotwood police eventually.

UPDATE @ 11:36 a.m. (Nov. 14)

A gun found in a Dayton yard at the end of October was found to be stolen last year.

The loaded gun recovered by a man mowing his lawn, was a Smith and Wesson 0.38-caliber special revolver loaded with five rounds, according to Dayton police.

The gun was reported stolen out of Trotwood Oct. 8, 2016 in the 5000 block of Wellfleet Drive. It had significant rust and wear to it, and could not be safely unloaded at the scene.

FIRST REPORT (Oct. 30)

A man mowing his neighbor’s yard made a startling discovery when he nearly ran over a loaded handgun Monday afternoon.

The man, who only identified himself as Brent, told News Center 7’s Sean Cudahy, he was cutting the front yard of his neighbor’s home in the 100 block of Ridge Avenue when he spotted the gun in the grass.

“I looked down and oh my god that's a gun, and I'm thinking is that real?”

Brent said the gun was loaded with bullets in it.

“You’ve got little kids around here, and little kids don’t know any better, the gun’s loaded.

“I could have shot myself,” added Brent.

The discovery was made by Brent around 12:55 p.m. and he immediately stopped mowing, and called police. Dayton police responded to the scene
