Area jails report heating issues after winter storm

UPDATE @ 3:12 p.m.:

A second area jail has reported heating issues following a weekend winter storm.

Temperatures dipped into the 50s in some areas of the Montgomery County Jail on Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Cold inmates were reportedly given extra blankets and linens.

Emergency maintenance crews and an HVAC vendor were called in to work on the heat.

Most areas of the jail are returning to a “comfortable temperature,” according to the sheriff’s office.

INITIAL REPORT:

Heat is back on at the entire Greene County Jail after air handlers for two of the jails pods failed to restart after a power outage Saturday night.

Maj. Kirk Keller said the heat was out for approximately 115 inmates for around six to eight hours overnight Saturday into Sunday. However, the rest of the jail’s heating system was operating properly.

Extra blankets were brought in to help keep the inmates warm as the temperature in the two pods fell to 54 degrees, Keller said.

Keller added that if the temperature would have fallen below 50 degrees they would have called in emergency crews to make the repair.
