LATEST: Dog, cat perish in Xenia house fire; its cause under investigation

UPDATE @ 11:33 p.m.: One of four dogs and a cat died in the Xenia house fire that remains under investigation, Xenia Fire Capt. Brian Brennaman said.

The three occupants and three other dogs were able to escape the flames, which Brennaman said firefighters believe started in a back bedroom of the house on West Second Street.

No firefighter was injured.

UPDATE @ 9:54 p.m.:

Crews are continuing to work on putting out a house fire in the 900 block of West Second Street in Xenia, where a medic has been called for at least one victim.

Fire crews from Xenia Twp., Beavercreek Twp., Spring Valley Twp., and New Jasper Twp. were sent to help as mutual aid, the city of Xenia tweeted:

INITIAL REPORT

Crews are on the scene of a house fire in the 900 block of West Second Street in Xenia, where a medic has been called for at least one victim.

There are as many as three dogs reportedly in the house.

The fire was reported about 9:20 p.m. and there were reports of heavy smoke showing and flames engulfing the rear of the one-story single-family home.
