Journalist speaking at MLK dinner plans to challenge audience

DAYTON — Roland Martin, author and award-winning journalist, will speak tonight, Jan. 18, at the Dayton Convention Center as part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Holiday Celebration and Presidential Banquet.

Martin is a CNN contributor, commentator for TV One Cable Network and author of “Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith” and “Speak, Brother! A Black Man’s View of America.” He recently interviewed President Barack Obama on issues facing the African American community in a special that will air Monday on One Cable network. He received the 2009 NAACP Image Award for Best Interview for “In Conversation: The Michelle Obama Interview.”Martin will discuss King’s legacy during Monday’s event.

He explained that instead of spending time rehashing what King did and what he had to say, “I’m going to challenge people on how they are (incorporating) what he did each and every day in their lives,”.

Instead of just coming to hear him speak, Martin hopes people will walk away from Monday’s event asking themselves how they can make King’s life relevant.

He believes that although King would look at our country today and see the tremendous strides taken toward social justice, his dream hasn’t been reached.

“He would still be fighting, absolutely fighting, for the equality gap to be closed. He would be on the front line,” Martin said.

Martin will also be speaking at the University of Dayton’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast, although the event is closed to the public.
