Kroger cuts gas prices at Shell stations

Dayton is one of five markets nationwide where customers will soon be able to use their Kroger fuel points at Shell gas stations.

Starting Monday, Feb. 15, customers who use the Kroger Plus loyalty card will get 10 cents off per gallon at participating Shell stations after buying $100 in groceries, the Kroger Co. announced Friday, Feb. 12.

Rachael Betzler, public relations manager for Kroger, said there will be 44 participating Shell stations in the Dayton area, extending to Springfield.

Shell stations in the Cincinnati area, including Butler and Warren Counties, also will offer the discount bringing the total for the area to 135 participating Shell stations.

Other areas where the discount is available include Nashville and Knoxville, Tenn. and San Diego.

Kroger sells gas at about a third of its nearly 2,500 grocery stores, but there are only a handful of Kroger fuel centers in the area. The addition of Shell more than quadruples the number of fuel centers accepting Kroger fuel points.

“We’re always looking for ways to help customers save money, and this is just another opportunity for us to do that,” Betzler said.

The points system remains the same, with customers earning one point for every dollar spent. Plus Card users will enter their account number at Shell pumps to redeem their discount.

At the Kroger on Dorothy Lane in Kettering, shoppers said Friday they’d consider taking advantage of the new discount.

“I might consider it if it’s a good discount,” said Amanda Elliott of Dayton. She usually doesn’t spend $100 on groceries all in one place and hasn’t taken advantage of Kroger fuel discounts in the past.

“There are no Kroger gas stations around here,” Elliott said.

Other chains, including Meijer and Walmart, offer discounts at their gas stations if you use their credit cards. Meijer credit card users get 5 cents off per gallon at Meijer stations, while Walmart credit card holders get 3 cents off per gallon at participating Walmart stations.
