At least 11 children ages 17 and under have been killed by gunfire since 2016, the latest a 2-year-old deputies said was shot by a 13-year-old playing with a gun in Harrison Twp., according to statistics obtained from Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County.
According to Public Health, six children died from gunfire in 2016 and four died last year. At least one child has died from gunfire in 2018, according to sheriff’s deputies.
Jvontae Johnston, 2, was killed after his 13-year-old brother was playing with a gun that accidentally discharged in the 2500 block of Wheeler Avenue, Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer said.
The 13-year-old boy was arrested and is being held in the juvenile detention center on a reckless homicide charge, court officials said.
Johnston’s father, Jamahl Evans, was arrested and is facing federal gun charges, records show.
Johnston’s death marks at least one child that has been killed by gunfire this year.
From 2010 to 2015, officials said nine children were killed in shootings.
