Local off-duty doctor helps saves a neighbor with CPR

Thanks to an off-duty doctor and EMS crews, a life was saved in April.

On April 28, emergency crews were dispatched on reports of a man in cardiac arrest. On scene, they found Dr. Scott Balonier, a neighbor and Kettering ER physician, performing CPR along with family and other neighbors, according to a Washington Twp. article.

Crews assisted Balonier with CPR, defibrillation and other advanced procedures, before transporting the patient to Southview Medical Center.

Following treatment, the patient was able to walk out of the hospital just a few days later.

“The probability of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest is extremely low,” said Washington Twp. Fire Chief Bill Gaul. “It goes to show the value of CPR training for the public, as well as, the excellent training of the responding paramedics and EMTs.”

The Kettering Health Network presented challenge coins to all responders involved.

During their meeting Monday night, the Washington Twp. Board of Trustees, issued a proclamation stating in part “that Dr. Scott Balonier be commended for responding to a neighbor in need and for using his advanced medical skills to save a life.”
