Man accused in rape-kidnapping case found competent to stand trial

HAMILTON — William H. Manis, who is accused of holding a woman captive for 10 days and raping her repeatedly, has been found competent to stand trial.

Manis, 44, of Hamilton, appeared today in Butler County Common Pleas Court, where Judge Noah Powers sealed his psychological evaluation report at the request of defense attorney Jeremy Evans. Evans had previously entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity for his client.

As part of his psychological evaluation, reports were done on both Manis’ competency for trial and his sanity. Powers admitted the competency report as evidence today, but the sanity report will not be included.

Evans also filed a motion for gag order in the case.

Manis was scheduled for a pre-trial hearing at 1:30 p.m. today, but his case was moved up to 10:30 a.m. due to a lockdown at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. Another pre-trial hearing has been set for 1 p.m. Jan. 25.
