Man found dead at Vandalia apartments is identified

The death of a man who was found Friday lying in bushes outside an apartment building is being investigated as suspicious and an autopsy has been ordered.

John Carver, 56, address not immediately known, was identified as the deceased, Vandalia police Lt. Dan Swafford told News Center 7 late Friday night.

Police received a call at about 3 p.m. about a suspicious person lying in bushes at the Brown School Station Apartments, in the 100 block of South Brown School Road, Swafford said.

“We found him behind the bushes,” Swafford said. “We’re trying to determine how he got here, who he is. He’s a white male in his 50s.”

Swafford said the death is being investigated as suspicious because of where the man was found.

“When we pulled him out of the bush, we got a quick look at him before they [Montgomery County Coroner’s Office personnel] took him off to the coroner’s office, but didn’t see anything,” Swafford said.

“There was nothing visible on him. We don’t know why he was there or what he was doing,” Swafford said.

A preliminary investigation also didn’t answer the question of whether the man lived at the apartment complex.

“Nobody recognizes him,” Swafford said.
