More illnesses linked to Springfield Dole plant outbreak

A listeriosis outbreak linked to Dole’s Springfield processing plant has now sickened 18 people in the U.S., according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

One additional illness has been reported in Missouri, and two new cases have been reported in Ohio. The newest cases were also the first in Ohio, making it the ninth state now affected by the outbreak, according to the CDC. The most recent illness was diagnosed on Jan. 31.

All 18 people were hospitalized, including one person from Michigan who died as a result of listeriosis, according to information from the CDC. One illness was reported in a pregnant woman.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has also reported a total of 11 cases in five provinces, including three deaths. However, it hasn’t been determined if listeria contributed to the cause of those deaths.

Lab tests performed by the Ohio Department of Health linked the outbreak to packaged salads produced in Springfield.

The affected products include Dole and store brands for Kroger, Aldi, Meijer and Walmart, and the salads can be identified by a product code that begins with an “A” on the packaging. Dole has recalled all of the products.

Listeria is a food-borne bacteria typically found in raw vegetables and meats, as well as some soft cheeses.
