Demolition crews began work on the house under the impression the gas had been shut off to the house in the 800 block of Foley Drive, Vandalia fire officials told our crew.
Workers heard gas coming from a ruptured line, stopped work, and called for help, according to officials.
Four homes were evacuated until the gas was shut off. Neighbors were allowed to return around 2 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
FIRST REPORT
Crews are working to contain a natural gas leak after workers who were demolishing a house struck a gas line in Vandalia Tuesday afternoon.
The leak was reported at the house in the 800 block of Foley Drive around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Some nearby homes were evacuated but an exact number wasn’t immediately known, according to fire crews on the scene.
According to dispatch records, the house was being demolished when the work crew struck the line.
No injuries have been initially reported.
