Northmont Academic Challenge team wins state in history

Northmont students have answered enough questions right this season to earn the title of state champions in the freshman/sophomore division in a test of knowledge.

Northmont High School’s Academic Challenge team defeated Beavercreek by a score of 310 to 80 to win the freshman and sophomore History Bowl State Championships at Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City.

This win adds to the school’s long list of accomplishments this year. This is the eighth win of the season in five different states. They have remained in the top five in the state all year in the “All-Subject Quiz Bowl.”

The team consisted of sophomores Sean Scranton, Samantha Street, Seth Eddleston, Amara Nwanoro and Zach Weeks. They will compete in the National History Bee National Championship as individuals.

The team will make its way to Commerce, Georgia, over spring break for a tournament before they head to Washington, D.C., in April.

The Bee is held concurrently with the National History Bowl National Championship. The team qualified for the Bowl. The events are April 27 and 28.

The All-Subject National Championships will be held the end of May to beginning of June.

The Academic Challenge Team consists of grades nine through 12, but the national championship event groups teams into a junior/senior division and a freshman/sophomore division, according to Academic Challenge Coach and Northmont Social Studies teacher David Jones.

Jones expects his team to be a top 10 seed at the national championship.
