A man identified as Deshawn Trae McGee was shot by a Dayton police officer early Wednesday morning after exiting a vehicle armed with a handgun, according to Dayton police Chief Richard Biehl.
Officers initially responded to the Shell gas station on West Third Street on reports of shots fired just before 3 a.m.
Police located the suspect vehicle, only described as “blacked out,” near Gettsyburg and Verona, and the driver then pulled into an address in the 300 block of Verona Road.
The suspect, later identified as McGee, reportedly exited the vehicle, armed with a handgun, prompting Dayton police to fire shots, Biehl said.

McGee was struck multiple times. Immediately after shooting McGee, police said officers began performing medical aid, including using tourniquets.
The officer who fired his weapon was identified as Officer Zachary Banks, Biehl said. A second officer, Officer Kyle Harris, was also with Banks at the time the shooting occurred.
Police are still working to determine if McGee fired his weapon and are using audio evidence to assist in that investigation, Biehl said.

An empty shell casing was recovered from the scene on McGee’s windshield and McGee’s weapon was empty when police found it, Biehl said.
No officers were injured.
The suspect was transported to Miami Valley Hospital and was listed in stable condition Wednesday.
Banks has been an officer with Dayton police since Aug. 20, 2012.
Harris has been with the department since March 23 and had been assigned in field training with Banks
Police said Banks has four commendations and a certificate of appreciation from the department. Banks also has one oral reprimand for a policy violation, the department said.
According to Biehl, this is the first police shooting in Dayton in 2018.
An ATF K-9 trained on explosives and accelerate detection was called to the scene, along with animal control.
