Police chase down man who ran from them during traffic stop

A 40-year-old man is in custody after he ran from Dayton police who had stopped a vehicle he was in as a passenger.

Officers initiated a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Elsmere Avenue, off Salem Avenue, just after 4:30 p.m. Monday when the man got out and took off running, Lt. Christopher Malson said.

He ran literally in a circle, heading toward the AM/PM Market in the 2300 block of Salem and returning to the 2000 block of Elsmere where he stopped, complaining of chest pains, Malson said. Police took him into custody there.

The officers checked out his ID to discover there is an active warrant for his capture, the lieutenant said.

A medic unit was called to take the man to a hospital before he's booked into jail.

The car police stopped initially took off so quickly police weren't able to get the license plate information because they began chasing the runner, Malson said.

The foot chase prompted a brief call for a Signal 99, an officer-in-need-of-assistance alert for all law enforcement in the area of a call to go to that call immediately. The apprehension prompted the cancellation of the Signal 99 seconds after Montgomery County Regional Dispatch initiated it.
